After starting with an informal opening on Sunday, Kohl’s department stores held a ribbon-cutting and grand-opening celebration on Wednesday for the Wisconsin-based chain’s new store on Abercorn Street, south of the White Bluff Road interchange.
Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson and local Kohl’s manager Phillip Battles were among store employees, shoppers and others on hand for the event.
The Savannah store in the 80,000-square-foot space formerly occupied by Goody’s and Office Depot was among 12 new stores Kohl’s opened Wednesday in 10 states, including Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington.
The new stores created about 1,500 jobs nationwide, including 125 in Savannah. Kohl’s now operates 1,146 stores in 49 states.
“While shoppers continue to be selective about their purchases, value is an important part of why customers choose Kohl’s,” said Kevin Mansell, Kohl’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “So we continue to offer quality national and exclusive brand merchandise in a fresh and exciting shopping environment, at an exceptional value.”
Kohl’s is known for offering brand-name merchandise in a friendly, convenient and value-conscious setting. The store’s offerings include clothing, housewares, jewelry, toys and cosmetics, similar to what shoppers would find in a big box mall retailer like Dillard’s or JC Penney.
