Santa and his elves, who bore a striking resemblance to deckhands and other employees of Savannah Riverboat Cruises, were at Memorial University Medical Center last month to deliver a boatload of toys.
The River Street-based company collected the toys through its “Sailing With Santa” charity cruises. This was the 20th year Savannah Riverboat Cruises has sponsored the cruises, where a child gets a free hour-long river cruise with Santa, complete with lap time and photo ops, in exchange for the donation of a new toy.
Working with the Next Generation, a philanthropy group that focuses on helping The Children’s Hospital at Memorial, Capt. Jonathan Claughton, president of the firm, and several of his employees delivered mounds of toys to the hospital.
The donation included toys for all ages, ranging from toy blenders to Nerf basketballs to Barbies to keyboards. Young patients who were able to leave their rooms had a chance to meet Santa in The Children’s Hospital playroom and choose their gifts, while the hospital’s child life specialists delivered toys to the rest of the pediatric patients.
