games people play

“We started playing it at work, and we all really enjoyed the game at work, and we started building sets to take home, and I said, ‘You know what? I bet there’s other people that can do this.’

“And we had a supply of lumber, so I built a fews sets and we put them on Craigslist, and I told my wife that she needed to make bags, and she kept saying no, so I ended up finding a guy who was selling bags, and when I got them home and got the family to play with me out in the driveway, she kept looking at the bags going ‘I can do this.’”

all in the family

“So she started making the bags, and the next thing you know, she’s not working full time any more. She’s working full time making bags, and I’ve almost a full-time job making boards ... Without her, I couldn’t get it done. She keeps me on track. She is, a lot of times, the brains of the operation. She keeps the business running when I’m at work.”

staying local

“My wife also has an embroidery business, and she buys all the materials for the bags from a local warehouse. We buy corn locally for the bags. And the lumber for the boards, I break down cargo shipping crates, so we try to stay about 90 percent green if we can.”

a commitment to quality

“So far, we’ve had very few problems. You build a lot of anything, and you’re going to occasionally have problems with one or two of them. We’ve had some issues with this and that, but we’ve never had a bag break, and I’ve been able to repair or replace any board that’s had an issue.”

far from bored

“We do try to keep a standing inventory at the house, but we’re selling them so fast that we have been able to keep a ready supply.

“With a full vinyl wrap, we can do just about anything you can imagine.”

why cornhole?

“One, it’s just a really fun game to play. Two, when you’re out tailgating, it’s easy to set up the boards and start playing. And when you put it away, it takes up very little space. You don’t have to dig a pit like you would for horseshoes.

“The bags are only a pound apiece, so it’s not like you’re (carrying) a big horseshoe, and if you accidentally hit somebody with a bag, the chances of bodily injury are very, very, very slim. And for must adults, it’s a great (opportunity) to hold an adult beverage while playing.”

business is booming

“We started building boards and making bags almost four years ago. It didn’t really get huge until last year. And that’s the year that it really took off. We built more boards in the last two years than we have the previous two combined.”

custom-made

“We did a Widespread Panic (a popular Athens, Ga.-based rock group) board that a lady had wanted. That was a wild one”

make it your own

“I suggest that you don’t get too caught up in winning and losing until you get comfortable throwing the bags. You can throw any way you want to, as long as it’s underhanded. … Relax. Throw in the yard and find your rhythm and find the way that’s most comfortable for you to throw.

Watch other people. If you think someone else is really good, mimic their style. If it works for you, great. If not, try something different.”

a cash crop

“We always tried to set it up where we could make a little money on the side, and I think from the beginning, we knew that if we could do it and do it correctly, we could make some all right money. It’s not something you would quit your full-time job to do. It will never be that size.”

it’s all worth it

“There’s personal point of satisfaction when you watch people playing on your equipment, and they’re enjoying themselves. And they don’t have to worry about it, and they really like (the equipment) they’re playing on.

“They don’t have to think about it after they buy, and that’s where you want to be. I want them to know it’s going to be right, and if there is a problem, we correct it right off the bat.”
