why Savannah?

“I saw it as an opportunity to offer Savannah adults another form of entertainment. I just wanted to create another venue for adults to just kinda act like kids, let go of their troubles, have some liquid encouragement and enjoy two or three hours doing something fun and creative. It’s very affordable. It’s a place where you just leave your troubles outside the door.”

from idea to image

“I’ll take the subject matter and the idea that I have, and say (to the art coaches): ‘Let’s come up with our own original piece, something fun.’ I’ll tell them what I want and then let them loose because that’s what they do. Then, once they’ve come up with the idea, I’ll add or subtract just from my personal taste until I get it to where I think it’s going to work, and then we put it out there.”

playing to your strengths

“With my background in the hospitality industry, and with a degree in fine arts, what comes natural to me is the actual running of the studio itself – being there, welcoming, making sure everybody is happy and has everything that they need and encouraging them along the way so the art coach can stay on the canvas. That all comes natural to me.”

bash and re-bash

“The majority of people come back time and time again. That is how my business is growing the fastest. I’ve advertised in print and radio, but the truth of the matter is, a happy customer is the best advertisement ever. And we’re having so much fun, and we’re doing it right here at the Art Bash, that people are telling everyone, ‘You’ve got to go try this. It’s so much fun’ or when they come again, they’ll bring someone who hasn’t tried it yet.”

stretch the canvas

“I’m probably not going to franchise, but I may open a second location. It’s not decided yet.”

so, if you want to start a business

“Have a business plan. Know that the event of opening a business is going to be greater than you anticipate. There’s going to be unforeseen things that come up … You need to network with small business owners, and there’s a lot of outlets for that in the city of Savannah.

find the right space

“When you’re looking at locations, know what the city requires before you put your name on a lease. These are things that you are responsible to know … Know your regulations and your city ordinances and code … You’re going to have to consider what type of business you’re opening first and what type of location is going to work for you.”

getting the right name

“Once you choose a name, you really need to get it marked before you start doing business and before you start doing a lot of your print work and your website and everything that goes with it. I learned a lesson, and I’d like to pass that lesson on.”

the finished product

“Just seeing (clients) laughing and enjoying themselves and the surprised look at the end when they’ve taken a blank canvas and (made it into) something that’s truly recognizable as the artwork they were copying, and they just look at me and say, ‘Oh, I cannot believe I did this. How much fun!’ And that’s truly the most enjoyable part for me.”
