A: As a proven local leader, please share your vision of Savannah’s future. What growth or challenge do you foresee?
A: In 2014, Savannah needs to press hard on completing and making progress on our key infrastructure projects, including the harbor deepening, the major road projects and the transparent and accountable implementation of splost funds.
The continued investment into technical training and practical education programs along with the port and positive advancement of our infrastructure should pay dividends.
Savannah leaders must be disciplined and accountable for these initiatives to continue to be effective.
Q: By the year 2020?
A: Savannah must make a dent in the crime problem.
This must start with a cultural shift on the value of the family. Everyone needs to understand the profound value of both a mother and a father devoted to the raising of their children, the protection of the home and the legacy of personal growth and development.
At the tribute to the life of John Matthews, I felt the calling of nobility that comes for taking personal responsibility for the improvement of our community. That calling needs to be sustained and refilled regularly in all our lives.
Q: By the year 2030?
A: My generation will have taken over the community. Perhaps by then we will have learned humility, found an appreciation for mercy and understand the value of truth.
We will rarely agree on strategy, but we can accept leadership founded on character, integrity and truth. Love does not envy; it is not proud or self-seeking. It always protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres. Love never fails.
Q: How will you do business differently in the coming year or decade?
A: I will be looking to put into action many of the long term projects we have been developing.
Q: What technological or cultural advances are you looking forward to in the coming year or decade?
A: The end of passwords, a move away from retirement.
Q: What qualities or assets will distinguish Savannah and preserve/advance our local economy?
A: Appreciation of our military, the expansion of the port, Protection of our history and Historic homes, the Live Oaks, and devotion to Southern hospitality.
Q: What economic drivers and business sectors promise the most growth in the next year or decade and why?
A: Balance lifestyle with predictable and sustainable economic systems. People need to love to live here; it needs to be easy to easy to work here.
Q: What college degrees will be the most in-demand in the Savannah area and why? A: Sales and Marketing. A good sales person is extremely hard to find and always will be.
Q: What advice do you have for other Savannah leaders in the coming year or dccade? A: Whatever is true, right, noble, pure, lovely, admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – focus on these things.
Q: What innovation of yours do you hope will be remembered by future generations?
A: I hope community investment is moved from a marketing tactic to a primary objective.
