Surf Lagoon Water Park opens in Pooler

  • Dash Coleman/Savannah Morning News - Za’Laiya Jones, 1, of Atlanta skeptically inches closer to spraying water Saturday afternoon during the opening of Surf Lagoon in Pooler.

Pooler’s newest attraction opened Saturday, making inner-tubing and outlet-mall shopping in the same afternoon all the more feasible. Surf Lagoon Water Park was nearly filled shortly after it opened.

“So far its been going great,” said marketing and sales manager Crystal Colson as hundreds of people in swimsuits splashed around behind her.

The park, situated off Town Center Drive a short distance from a variety of chain hamburger restaurants, movie theaters and the Tanger Outlets, has a few water slides, a couple of pool areas and an automated stream people can float down.

Ashley Jones of Atlanta was watching her 1-year-old daughter, Za’laiyah, skeptically approach a fountain. Jones, who grew up in Savannah, said it was “something to do,” and that the park is a nice attraction.

She’s surprised, in general, by growth in the area.

“Who would have thought Pooler would blow up like this?” she said.

Dawn Beach of Savannah said she wished the park, which can fit about 1,200 people, were a tad bigger, but she made the most of kicking back by the pool while her 9-year-old son, Jordan, and his friend, 7-year-old Zack Singleton, took a dip.

“It’s relaxing for the kids,” she said.

On the flip side, the size of the park is exactly what Christy Nichols of Richmond Hill liked. She said that made it easier to keep an eye on her 3-year-old son, Shamarr, who was having a blast running at erupting water and flexing at it.

“Everything is right here that he is going to participate in, so I don’t have to worry about running around,” Nichols said. “It’s relaxing for parents.”
