I’m a certified registered nurse-anesthetist. I went to the University of South Carolina for a masters in biomedical science with an emphasis in nurse anesthesia. I also hold a bachelor of science in nursing.
I hold two certifications, one in critical care, and then two years ago I became a certified health coach through the McDonald Center for Obesity Prevention and Education (COPE). I’m COPE certified through the Villanova University School of Nursing.
why did you change careers?
In the summer of 2012, my father Gary was 330 pounds and suffering with multiple obesity-imposed health conditions, including chronic pain exacerbated by obesity along with sleep apnea. … He started working with a health coach who, like myself, partnered with him to figure out his goals.… My husband and I came to this program after my dad lost 40 pounds.
Not only did he lose weight, he found energy. He became involved with a veteran’s association. He bought a boat. He re-engaged in his life at 70.
My husband and I started this journey in April 2013.
Prior to the program, I was physically, emotionally and financially a mess. … As a nurse anesthetist, I was working long hours, not taking care of myself, and so physically and emotionally, my health was poor.
Bob was not taking care of himself. I realized he had the abdomen that goes with sudden death … I was inspired to call a health coach. Since I came to the program, I lost 20 pounds. Bob lost 30 pounds. I haven’t had a cold, flu or in-bed illness since I made the choice to be healthy.
Suddenly I started to feel better … And my co-workers said ‘You look fabulous.’ I became a coach because other people deserve to have this information.
Now I inspire other people.
“(Of course) results are individual as each plan is tailored to a client’s needs and goals.
With success, they feel physically satisfied and they’re able to keep going.
what she does
I work with individuals in every area of their health. The program offers a free health coach, educational system and nutrition program designed to help them reach a healthy weight and develop long-term skills for healthy eating for their lifetime. They have to change their habits.
I can help identify the strategies that will work for them. And I can be that mirror of accountability.
why we’re successful
I believe in the successes that I personally experienced and those that I have seen because I‘m personally surrounded by immense support. And support from my team of coaches. Ultimately we are working toward a healthy America.
I have a couple. One from Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen, the medical director and co-founder of Take Shape for Life: “Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels.”
and my personal quote
“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.” My job as a health coach is to focus on choices, habits…Our focus is to create strategies to reach your goal.
More than 250 across the country. And I have six coaches now actively coaching or learning to be coaches. We’re all constantly learning.
best personal achievement
I have the joy of building a partnership with my husband. We’ve developed several different businesses….And then there are my two gifts, my children.
best professional achievement
Inspiring others to reach inside themselves, to reach their best. It’s what I really love about being a health coach.
