Savannah Tech, Step-Up Savannah partner to offer jockey-truck training

If you’ve never heard of a jockey truck, chances are you haven’t spent much time around our ports or in the cavernous warehouses that support port logistics.

A jockey truck, or yard truck, is a small semi-tractor used to move mostly container chassis within a cargo yard, warehouse facility or intermodal facility – much like a switcher locomotive is used to position rail cars.

At Georgia Ports’ Garden City Terminal, you’re most likely to see jockey trucks moving containers back and forth between one of two on-terminal rail facilities to ships on the docks.

At area third-party logistics operations such as Coastal Logistics, Port City Logistics and Schneider Logistics, jockey trucks join fork lifts in moving cargo around warehouses, according to Kevin Werntz, vice president for economic development at Savannah Tech.

“In fact, it was a logistics operation that first brought up the idea of jockey-truck training to Step-Up Savannah’s Chatham Apprentice Program, which then partnered with our Professional Continuing Education Department to create the course,” Werntz said.

The Chatham Apprentice Program helps unemployed and under-employed Chatham County residents find or create career paths that offer decent wages and opportunities for advancement.

Participants in the program learn professionalism, teamwork, conflict resolution and other employability skills and receive jockey truck training provided by Savannah Tech.

The jockey truck operator safety course includes training on control systems, vehicle inspection, basic control, backing, visibility, communication, and space management as well as hands-on practice on a TICO jockey truck.

The jockey truck will be available for training through the end of February at STC’s Savannah Campus, 5717 White Bluff Road.

Cost for the 16-hour course is $250 per person.

STC’s Continuing Education Department will be scheduling additional sessions with employers interested in training their staff.

STC’s Professional Continuing Education Department provides short-term classes in both traditional and online classroom settings. Courses cover a variety of skills and workforce development options that match local employer’s needs. For more details about other classes visit: www.savannahtech.edu.
