Portside: New ship-to-shore cranes coming online at GPA’s Garden City Terminal

The first of four new Neo-Panamax cranes came online last week at Georgia Ports Authority’s Garden City Terminal, bringing its operating fleet of massive ship-to-shore cranes to 23- more cranes than any other U.S. terminal.

The second crane is set to become operational Monday, with the remaining two due to come online by the end of April, bringing the total number to 26 this year: 20 Neo-Panamax cranes and six Post-Panamax cranes.

Designed by Konecranes of Finland, these enormous cranes can work the largest ships calling on the U.S. East Coast.

Their arrival and installation comes not a moment too soon as Garden City Terminal is expected to host its largest container ship ever in May.

“We’ve been advised by a customer that they will be sending a 13,000 TEU ship to us sometime that month,” said GPA executive director Griff Lynch. “That ship will be the first of many we’ll start to see, especially as the completion of the Bayonne Bridge raising at the Port of New York/New Jersey is completed at the end of this year, giving all three East Coast gateway ports the ability to handle the larger Neo-Panamax ships.”

Those ports – NY/NJ, Norfolk and Savannah – are expected to reap the most benefits from an expanded Panama Canal.

In addition to the four new cranes that came in last December, four more Neo-Panamax cranes are on order and will be commissioned in 2018.

“Expanding our capabilities means we are able to grow along with our customers, and adjust to changes in the logistics marketplace, such as increasing vessel sizes,” said GPA Chief Operating Officer Ed McCarthy.

The growing crane fleet, working over nearly 10,000 contiguous feet of dock, will be able to handle more than 1,000 container moves per hour when all 30 cranes are in place.

So, just how much cargo can these big cranes handle?

According to GPA and Konecranes, each one can lift up to 65 long tons. That’s the equivalent of two C-130 transport planes, 45 Volkswagen Beetles or nearly 72,000 pairs of Nike Air Jordans.

“The improvements we’re making to our terminal infrastructure demonstrate the GPA’s commitment to expand capacity, providing more opportunities for growth and greater flexibility to meet customer needs,” McCarthy said.

The port will have an opportunity to show off that ability right away, according to Lynch.

“The new shipping alliances, which set sail beginning Saturday, will have some 35 vessels serving the Port of Savannah weekly – the most of any East Coast port,” he said.
