Savannah-based Optim Health System has sold its medical facility in Millen to GA Medical Holdings Corp., just days before the 25-bed “critical access” hospital was slated to close, Georgia Health News reported this week.
The sale, which was finalized June 16, allows the Jenkins County hospital to maintain uninterrupted daily operations and ensures a fluid transition for staff, employees, and patients. The hospital’s emergency department will remain open and available to the community.
“Throughout the difficult process of having to close our doors, conversations with potential buyers continued,” said Bob Sellers, CEO of Optim’s Jenkins and Screven County facilities. “Patient safety and quality care remained one of our highest priorities and we have worked closely with members of the county commission as we found a way to provide a future for the hospital.”
Like many other rural hospitals, Optim Medical Center-Jenkins faced the ever-increasing battle of falling Medicare/Medicaid reimbursements, decreased patient activity, and needed costly infrastructure upgrades, resulting in the April 25th announcement of that the Jenkins facility would close June 24 and merge services with a nearby Optim-owned medical center in Sylvania.
Jenkins would have been the seventh hospital in rural Georgia to announce its closure in the last four years.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed and relatively little is known about the buyer, according to Georgia Health News.
The Georgia Secretary of State’s website lists GA Medical Holdings as based in Sunrise, Fla. Its CEO is Aaron Durall, whose Durall Capital Holdings, LLC, also owns Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dalonega.
Earl Whitely has been named Interim Administrator/COO of what is now known as Jenkins County Medical Center
“We are committed to continuing to provide the highest quality care, serving the residents of Jenkins County and partnering with the community,” Whitely said in a statement.
Headquartered in Savannah, Optim Health System is a collaboration between the physician-owned Optim Medical Center-Tattnall and Optim Medical Center-Jenkins, Optim Medical Center-Screven, Optim Surgery Center, Optim Imaging, and Optim Therapy, offering specialized treatment in multiple areas including imaging, emergency room, inpatient care, laboratory services, surgical services, physical therapy, pain management and primary care with a musculoskeletal focus.
