A few shovels full of dirt made history for HOS Management on Tuesday as they broke ground for the company’s first retail development, the Commons in The Village at Savannah Quarters.

“Our biggest thing is that we’re bringing a new amenity to the city of Pooler and the Savannah Quarters community, so that’s important to us given that we live here,” said Kris Patel, who serves as chief financial officer for HOS.

Headquartered in Pooler, HOS Management is a second-generation hospitality and development group with more than 30 years of experience.

Founded by his father Kirit and uncle Anil Patel, Kris works alongside his brother, Riki, who is vice president of operations. Local hotel properties include the Cotton Sail Hotel, Aloft Hotel and Cambria Suites Downtown Savannah Historic District. The group recently acquired a retail center near Southbridge, which Kris said helped propel them to build one from the ground up.

“Being able to develop something for the community which I live in is very exciting and just awesome. We can’t wait,” he said.

Located across the street from the new Publix supermarket, which is currently under construction, the Commons retail center will have a footprint of 32,000 square feet and feature 21 tenant units.

The Patels aim for the center to serve not only Savannah Quarters but also the nearby communities of Southbridge, Berwick and the Pine Barren and Quacco Road areas.

The area is no stranger to developments. Pooler Planning and Zoning officials on Monday approved plans for a 130-acre mixed-use development across Pooler Parkway near the intersection of Interstate 16. Pooler Mayor Mike Lamb said he was glad to see the area growing as it has in other parts of the city.

“What makes it very cool in our city is to have all of these beautiful businesses coming to our city,” Lamb said.

“We’ve built on the north side quite a bit, and I’m glad that we’re finally moving to the south end of (Pooler). You see across the street that there’s even more coming.”

Construction on the center is set to begin in the next 45 days and should be completed next spring. According to Kris Patel, a few tenants are already in the works, but Savannah Coffee Roasters has already put its mark one of the planned units.

“We’re really excited about it. This matches perfectly with our brand. We’re very fussy where we open where we open the stores, so this is perfect,” said Lori Collins, owner of Savannah Coffee Roasters.

“We love what they’re doing here, and it’s still to me part of Savannah, so Savannah Coffee Roasters and Savannah Quarters has got a good sound.”
