Chatham Parkway is now the home of long-time Savannah business, Southern Motors Acura.
To celebrate the move a grand opening will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There are a lot of factors that go in to having a successful business.
Timing, a good product or service, the right location and customer service can all contribute to failure, or to prosperity.
Having a successful family run business — for close to a century — takes all that and more.
The Kaminsky family, owners of Southern Motors Acura, know that first-hand. Each generation since 1929 has followed the lessons handed down from company founder, Julius Kaminsky.
“My father taught us to never pre-judge a customer,” Myron Kaminsky said. “You talk to everyone and treat them better than you expect them to treat you.”
Myron Kaminsky and his two brothers continued and expanded his father’s business that started on Broughton Street. One brother is now deceased and the other has retired.
Myron’s sons Ross and Adam Kaminsky, started working with their father at the Broughton Street dealership as young boys and both eventually found their way into the family business.
“I tried to dissuade them from working here,” Myron Kaminsky said. “Having a family business is hard.”
Ross said he started working on Broughton Street when he was 10.
“I washed cars and learned to change oil,” Ross Kaminsky said.
Later on the brothers learned the parts and service departments and sales.
The Kaminskys own the Acura dealership, along with a Honda dealership on Abercorn Street and the Springfield Chrysler Dodge Ram Jeep dealership on Ga. 21 South in Springfield.
“We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t provide good customer service,” Myron Kaminsky said.
Julius Kaminsky also insisted on being accessible to customers, Myron Kaminsky said.
“It was important to him,” Myron Kaminsky said. “He always said to customers when you want to talk to me my office is here and the door is open.”
The family has also kept that policy in place and it’s a rare day that an owner is not on site.
Consistently providing good service for customers, listening to their needs and being available, are key factors in their success, Myron Kaminsky said.
The trio have now taken the next step into their future with a new dealership location on Chatham Parkway.
The family has owned the property where the new dealership is located for about 10 years, Adam Kaminsky said. The new building features “right at” a 30,000 square-foot showroom, Myron Kaminsky said. Broughton Street will continue to provide basic automotive services.
“It’s an up and coming area,” Adam Kaminsky said.
The Kaminskys also believe in helping others.
The family donates a portion of the sale of every car — both used and new — to Savannah Hospice’s Camp Aloha.
The camp is for children ages 6-17 who have experienced the death of a loved one within the last two years.
“For a lot of these children it is the only counseling they ever get,” Myron Kaminsky said. “It’s close to all of our hearts.”
